School Rumble 2nd Term 4

Well, that was an interesting take on the normally tomboyish Mikochin. Also nice to see some character development for Akira especially her love of practical jokes. I still have Salva Nos playing in my head whenever she appears though. The star of this episode for me, though, was Eri strutting her tsundere stuff. Continue reading ‘School Rumble 2nd Term 4′

Girl’s High 4

While it’s not like Magikano where fans started coming out of the closet after Ender’s bold declaration of fandom, I’m feeling pretty chuffed that animeblogging legend Jeff Lawson also enjoys this series for its stupid funniness. Continue reading ‘Girl’s High 4′

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya 4

Quite relieved that Haruhi is going from strength to strength. One of the things that I enjoy about this series is that it’s hard to pigeon-hole it into a normal category. The setting is high school but with romance, sci-fi, wacky humour all thrown in and as diverse as these elements are, they all hang together very well. Even after watching the subs, I still had to rely on DarkMirage’s explanation to get a full grip on all the plot elements.

I also liked how the episode threw me into the deep end about how everyone in the SOS-Dan knew about Haruhi’s God Mode and each other’s roles. I think this plays well to fandom because (1) the novel-readers can feel omniscient; (2) the rest of us have to spend some braincells to think about it thus appreciating its construction even more as well as engage in speculation. IMHO anime that have long term fandom usually achieve this by creating intriguing plot elements that are never fully explained or resolved thus leaving fans plenty of space to extend the franchise. Black Lagoon 3

The gang are in home port at what seems to be a South Vietnam seaside town. Dutch is greeted by quite a few towns people before the local bigwig gangster Chin pulls up for a word. He’s unhappy about the Russian mafia muscling in heroin smuggling (courtesy of the deal with Asahi Heavy Industries in the previous episode) and tells Dutch not to work for Balalaika. Black Batou refuses and Chin warns him that he will regret it.

As the crew put out to sea, six boats try to attack them in a scissor movement. Two of them are taken out by their own crossfire due to Dutch’s deft manoeuvring and the rest are dispatched by ZGMF-X20A Strike Levy wielding a grenade launcher and submachine gun. I thought they should have played Vestige during that fabulous fight scene. :P Later Balalaika and her goons show up to show Chin who’s boss.

I have no idea what to expect of this series (haven’t seen the manga) but I do hope it keeps this up. Great action again. There’s also some nice, short character development of Levy as she talks a bit about her very unpleasant childhood with Rock. If Levy continues to be developed, perhaps she won’t be so one-dimensional by the end? Wishlist: A girlfriend for Levy or at least someone who wants to be her girlfriend - I just can’t get the thought of my head after she teased Rock about putting him into a dress, ribbons and taking him that way to a dance party. LOL

Also liked the larger gang politics - there’s continuity as we see the (failed) backlash against Balalaika’s expansion of her power after her deal with Kageyama and this element looks set to develop with Balalaika striking back at the Lagoon company’s attackers without being asked and keeping them on retainer. Fate/Stay Night 16

By the power of moé, awkward romance and Caliburn_save_as_a_copy, we will punish you!

Game CG. Actually I prefer this version. (;^_^)
