The rest, accumulated over a period of seven weeks, is the complete Noir DVD set. Am really enjoying the write-ups that accompany it and the sheer dedication of the production process helps to explain why this is one of my favourite classics. The only fly in the ointment was the cutting of that the scene where the little children were shown to be carrying arms in the Soldats village. While understandable, it really neutered the horror and absurdity of the whole idea of Soldats and their proto-Hobbesian conception of human nature. Watching this series a second time, Kirika’s Letter was just dripping with raw desire and longing which Mireille obviously understood… :)
Keeping the momentum going, here’s my top 10 list of favourite anime elder sister types [edit: from recent series]. Seems that the hontou ni class of anime blog has captured the siscon niché of the market (;^_^) - with Stripey specialising in girls who like their brothers a bit too much while one area of focus for me is Oneesama types. Pretty big difference still, within this niche. Stripey gets his shivers down the spine from such instances as Nemu’s “Niiiii-san!” or Pacifica’s “Daisuki dayo!” so technically his niché is “cute girls with elder brother complex” (but that’s too wordy so he’ll just stick to "siscon". In contrast, I get my thrills from the girls listed below.
The screencap above says a lot about my criteria. She must be an actual older sister to someone or if not, she is addressed as such or have the term associated with her. Hawtness is an obvious criteria. Significant screentime rules out Suzuka’s elder sis or Motoko Aoyama’s aneeue (both of whose names escape me). Character traits like natural leadership, bossiness, domineering also given high weight. Really enjoyed all of Rin’s screentime particularly her offer to handle Taiga-nee so while I thought Chris’ renaming of this series as “Yawn/Good Night” was witty, I can’t really agree with it. Yet. Somehow I felt very let down by this episode. Normally I’d be roaring with laughter at the fanservicey attempt by Mashiro to force an activation kiss on Arika but that was overwhelmed by my disappointment at Arika’s non-reaction to the news of Aoi’s recent demise. Likewise Tomoe getting her “reward” from Shizuru was a pale imitation of the ShizNats dynamics from HiME. Tomoe just isn’t powerful enough, deranged enough or cool enough despite Rie Tanaka’s best voiceacting efforts.
And Midori displays her leadership skills but it didn’t go down well with me at all, having experienced too many “leaders” whose idea of leading is simply walking around, looking self-important and using the holy trinity of eye power, finger power and mouth power. Occifers bleah especially the COLs - maki maki your estab!!
Trivia note. Fia seems to have the same robe and element as Miss Maria’s Monica-oneesama from Ep 8.
The “Chika worries about her weight” episode. I appreciated Chika, as a character, much more as a result. Previously she seemed fairly backgroundish - providing the link for the other girls to Nobue-oneesama, being one of Nobue’s foils and Miu’s closest friend/victim. Didn’t enjoy Miu’s antics this time round as she relentlessly teased Chika about her weight gain. While I could understand how cruel young children can be and that it was necessary to drive the plot, it was much less zany or original compared to most of her previous capers.
