Looks like the mystery Otome from last week’s preview might actually be Ms Discipline Mistress herself, in her teens, 50 years ago. Most significant for me were two larger ideas. The first, which had been hinted at during Ep 6’s biology book, from Irina that the people of this planet had originally migrated on spaceships from Earth. The second, from Argos’ conversation with Midori and the Aswald, that the Black Valley seeks to revive a lost past, probably one based on the technology we are more familiar with. ZOMG. What a dramatic episode.
The accident eight years ago that claimed the lives of Rin’s parents and Kaede’s mother shocked Kaede and she lost the will to live. To save her, Rin claims responsibility for the accident and Kaede returns from the edge literally with a vengeance - her newfound purpose in life is to make Rin’s life a living hell. Rin’s dream in Ep 5 was part of a memory when Kaede told him that he should just die for killing her mother. After years of abuse, Kaede finally realizes the truth via an old postcard and tries to atone for what she has done by becoming Mahoro.
But with Rin finding happiness with Shigure Asa, and that she has never seen him so happy before, her atonement project - the foundation of the third phase of her life - slowly but inexorably crumbles. And with it, her self-restraint. This culminates with her wishing death on Asa using the exact same phrase that she cursed Rin with. Asa, who is in the midst of a serious attack, collapses spectacularly - almost as if in response to her curse. Haven’t played the game. Don’t know much about the TYPE-MOON franchise (I get my info from The Moonlit World and bluemist). Was disappointed by the Tsukihime anime. But it’s created such a buzz amongst the good and great of the anime blogging commuity (Garten, moyism, Omni et al) that I had to check out the curtain raiser.

Ep 17. Have called in the heavy artillery, my old partner, who now goes by the name of Shirakawa Nana. But Nana-chan doesn’t even carry Walther-san with her anymore! She kept saying that I shouldn’t blow my cover by blowing Suzuka’s brains out with Beretta-san. Took her offer to intro Akitsuki-kun to her so she could help him understand my feelings more. That woman and her kunoichi somehow joined us for karaoke and we had to feed them our initial meeting cover story. But at least Akitsuki didn’t sing that duet with that woman. I am Akitsuki-kun’s girlfriend!
Ep 18. Am sure Nana-chan fed Akitsuki-kun my birthday info. He lied to me about not being able to go dating on Sat but am sure he will get me a nice present. Followed him, via the GPS-locator- mobile-phone- strap and he was with that woman! When he came to give me my present, all Akitsuki-kun was talk about was Suzuka this, Suzuka that. Itch for Beretta-san was so strong. Returned Suzukafied present to Akitsuki-kun. I am Akitsuki-kun’s girlfriend, aren’t I?
Ep 19. Refused to talk to Akitsuki-kun as was so afraid I’d blurt out that am planning to off Suzuka with Beretta-san, never mind Nana-chan’s advice and all. But how not to arouse suspicion? Everyone will know it was me. Akitsuki-kun came to the house to give present again and said he found me cute at pond etc. Brilliant plan came to me. Break up with Yamato, accept present, so I can shoot Suzuka without arousing suspicion! I, Honoka Sakurai, am Akitsuki-kun’s past and future girlfriend!
Ep 20. Rejoined track team and started being nice to Akitsuki-kun again so no one will suspect am paranoid, possessive and seething with jealousy. Discussed Operation Build Confidence with Nana-chan. I will build my confidence before confessing to Akitsuki-kun again. BTW code decryption: Build Confidence = Kill Suzuka.
Rin and Asa receive Kaede’s blessing for their relationship. Asa feeds Rin a cookie, mouth to mouth and also gets Rin to feed her lunch. More hot Rin-Asa s3xx0r. However Asa’s illness rears its head. Rin learns more about why Asa is so insistent about not using magic and is forced to take drastic measures to break Asa’s inhibitions towards magic in order to save her life.
